$1m funding commitment for MS research

11 May, 2020

MS Australia has announced a new funding boost of $1 million from MS Limited (which combines the state organisations from NSW, Vic, Tas and the ACT) to support MS research in Australia.

The funding will be used to fund further research into myelin repair and neuroprotective research that will pave the way to end MS forever.

MS Research Australia’s Acting CEO, Mr John Blewonski, said the additional funding gave the research community an extra boost for the critical work they do in seeking a cure for MS.

“In an incredibly competitive environment for not-for-profits where funding has been made even tougher due to the impacts of coronavirus, this is a significant commitment from our state MS organisations,” Mr Blewonski said.

“MS Australia is committed to all aspects of the MS Strategic Roadmap, including our goal of increasing funding to MS research to record levels and ensuring the MS research community has certainty regarding their research and career path.”

Dr Julia Morahan, Head of Research at MS Research Australia, said the new funding would support the MS research community.

“This new funding will be invested in accelerating the progress of the holy grail of MS research, remyelination and methods to boost neuroprotection to potentially provide avenues to enhance repair and restore function in those with progressive MS.

“Ongoing funding is critical to the continuation of the world-leading work our research community is doing to find a cure for MS,” Dr Morahan said.
