$1 million worth of pro-bono support

19 January, 2017

Pro bono support is crucial to the success of MS Research Australia. It ensures the organisational and fundraising expenses are kept as low as possible, maximising the amount of funding invested into vital MS research.

Over the last financial year MS Research Australia has received approximately $1 million in pro bono support. MS Research Australia is extremely grateful to the individuals and organisations who donate their services, volunteer their valuable time and expertise, or donate a product. The spirit of volunteerism, using networks and pro bono support has been a fundamental reason that the small MS Research Australia team can amplify its reach.

Over the past year support has been received from wide ranging areas including legal assistance, public relations, advertising, venue and catering provisions and event management. Alongside in-kind and pro-bono partnerships, our volunteers and interns assist in administration, communications and finance. MS Research Australia’s volunteers are dedicated and committed and they quickly become a trusted member of our small team, freeing up our internal resources.

One of our recent volunteers Tu Nguyen initially started on a three month internship in the finance team. Her commitment to our mission was outstanding and Tu’s enthusiasm and interest saw her continue with us on a voluntary basis for over a year. Tu is studying a Bachelor of Medical Science and a Bachelor of Business at the University of Technology, and has now transitioned into a full time paid internship with Deloitte, although she remains involved with MS Research Australia, volunteering at events.

Tu said ‘As part of my volunteer internship, I have contributed to the finance team, the Kiss Goodbye to MS campaign, the Red Affair fundraising dinner and database administration. I have also been volunteering for my local community and university for the past 6 years and I have found that having had the opportunity to volunteer at MS Research Australia has been the most rewarding. I feel so privileged to have had the chance to work with such an amazing team, so driven to make a change for people living with MS.’

‘The dedication of the MS Research Australia team and their commitment to work relentlessly to combat such a debilitating disease is inspiring.  I now know that once I graduate from university I want to have the opportunity to work for a charity at one point in my career.’

Petricia Augustus, Head of Communications, Marketing and Operations, MS Research Australia said, ‘MS Research Australia is extremely grateful to Tu, and all of our interns, as well as all of the pro bono partnerships we have established. It is through their generosity that our small team can keep administration costs well below industry standards, ensuring that we concentrate on our mission of finding better treatments, the cause and the cure for MS.’
